There are many sources of rankings, both national (US schools only) and international (US schools compared to international schools). When referring to rankings it is important to remember that every ranking agency – whether a private company like US News, or a non-profit like the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2004 – uses it's own ranking methodology and agenda. Therefore, rankings are only useful as a comparative tool, but should not be the primary tool used to determine which school a students will apply to.The final decisions about where to apply should be based on far more than just rankings.

University rankings, though very subjective, can provide a general sense of the overall quality of a particular institution. However, just because your school of choice may not be ranked in any of the lists below does not mean that it isn't a great college, university or graduate school. Most rankings include only the top 50 or top 100 programs in a given academic category. And because the USA has nearly 4,000 colleges, universities and graduate schools, it's easy to see how some great institutions can be excluded from ranking tables.
