Recognition of US Degrees in Taiwan
Each year thousands of Taiwanese students go to the U.S., with many eventually returning to Taiwan with a US undergraduate or graduate degree.Theoretically Taiwan's Ministry of Education cannot recognize the U.S. schools just as US Department of Education cannot recognize those in Taiwan. In this respect, as long as the degree is authentic, people are free to list successful completion of a US degree on their resume. For detailed information about document authentication, please go to the Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs web site at http://www.boca.gov.tw/~boca3007/en/index.htm
When the foreign transcript, diploma or certificate is officially used in Taiwan, such as making a note on the I.D. card, applying for a teaching job or government post, or taking a qualification exam, the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) is required by the Taiwan's government to verify the foreign documentation. In addition, Taiwan's Ministry of Education is also is responsible for recognizing the degrees if the documentation is used for a university teaching or administrative position.
In order to avoid having the degree be rejected by one of the aforementioned government institutions, here are some useful guidelines to follow:
Step1: Before choosing a school to enroll in, you should confirm that the degree you would like pursue is offer by a school that is included in “Accredited Institutions of Postsecondary Education”, an educational guide published by the American Council on Education. The MOE uses the content of “Accredited Institutions of Postsecondary Education” as a reference for the recognition of the US degrees.Students are encouraged to contact the MOE to request information. Step2: Degrees earned through the standard on-campus method of instruction (excluding summer session courses or distance learning), are normally accepted as bona fide by the MOE.Students should exercise caution when considering enrolling in non-residential degree programs (i.e. online & distance learning).
Step3: After completing their studies, students should bring the documentation to the Taiwan consular or trade office located in the city where you're studying.Students should request that consular or trade office staff affix an official stamp on you certificate, diploma, or transcript. This encompasses the normal process of foreign degree document verification.
