How to Apply
What's Here? The Boarding School Application Process; The College and University Application Process; The GraduateSchool Application Process
Applying to a US high school, college, university or graduate school may seem at first to be a daunting process. While some school systems use a common application for all their schools in their system, many US schools have their own applications designed to satisfy their individual admissions requirements. However, while individual applications may be different, there is much commonality between the components which make up an application. This fact allows students to use the same information and referees (individuals students have chosen to write a letter of support for their applications) for a large number of applications. For example:
Statement of Purpose
Many high schools, colleges, universities and graduate schools will ask the applicant to write a Statement of Purpose describing in detail why the student wants to study in her chosen academic area at a particular school.Aside from the name of the school being applied to, one statement can be used for every program the student is applying to.
Essay Questions
Man schools will ask a variety of essay questions designed to help the admissions committee determine a student's suitability to a particular school or academic program. While essays will vary, the topics they cover will generally converge, making it easier for the writer to answer such questions.
Referees
Most schools will ask for letters of reference from individuals qualified and suited to supporting the student's application for admission. The same reviewers can often be used for multiple applications, making the application process far more manageable.
Online Applications
Most US colleges, universities and graduate schools now offer the possibility of completing an online application. Most of these online applications are run through the same software system (owned by The Princeton Review), which allows for a lot of commonality between applications from different schools. This helps a great deal in simplifying the application process.
Many US colleges and universities use a common application for the schools in their system. So if a student wanted to apply to, for example, several universities in the California State University system, the student could use one application as opposed to a different application for each school.
Another attractive aspect of the US school admissions process is that the vast majority of high schools, colleges, universities and graduate schools use standardized tests rather than their own unique tests. So, for example, if a student wanted to apply to 10 different MBA programs, she would most likely only have to take the TOEFL and GMAT tests, rather than separate tests for each individual MBA program.Again, this helps to make the US education system one of the easiest systems in the world to apply to.
