Diversity in the USA
What's Here? Cultural Composition of the USA
The United States is a young nation built on the foundation of ethnic diversity. As Europeans dispersed over the American continent in the 18th and 19th centuries, joining the Native American population (also known as American Indians) , African Americans became part of the American ethnic landscape through the early slave trade, and later through immigration.More recent decades have seen a high influx of Asian and Latin American immigrants creating a mixture of races throughout the country. At this time the Hispanic population in America has reached a percentage equal to the Black or African American percentage, which stands at twelve percent of the total population. Asian Americans follow at a distant third at approximately 3.6% of the population. While white Americans are still the majority at 75.1%of the population, the nation's Hispanic and Asian populations continue to grow at much faster rates than the population as a whole.
